The Monterey County Now's excellent article about the Ira Bastian case, which was prosecuted by one of our own board members, Assistant District Attorney Matthew L’Heureux, should not be missed.
Congratulations ADA L'Heureux on securing a conviction and justice for the family and friends of Anna and George Smith.

The Power of Community, Innovation, and Persistence: A President’s message:
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Much progress has been made since our last newsletter, and I’m excited to share these updates with you.
September was National Cold Case Month—a time recognized across the country as a call to action focused on unsolved murders, missing persons, and unidentified human remains. Locally, we’ve seen a significant development: in the cold case prosecution of The People v. Ira Bastain, the defendant was found guilty as charged in connection with two homicides with special circumstances.
This case stands as a powerful example of how persistence, thorough investigative work, and advancements in forensic science can work together to achieve justice. The verdict brought long-overdue accountability and resolution for the victims, their families, and the entire community. Cases like this reinforce the critical importance of pursuing cold case resolutions—we must not stop.
We’re also honored to announce our participation in the upcoming Monterey County Gives! campaign, a county-wide initiative highlighting local nonprofits working to make a positive impact. The campaign opens November 13, 2025, and runs through December 31, 2025. We look forward to connecting with even more community members during this time and inviting them to join us in our mission.
As always, our newsletters and website will keep you informed of our progress. We’ll continue sharing stories of hope, resolution, and the real ways your support is making a difference in people’s lives.
Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can give voice to the voiceless—and hope to the heartbroken.
